Abstract

Asian and Latinx students lag behind Caucasians in doctoral degree completion rates. This phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of online Asian and Latinx doctoral students using non-random purposive convenience sampling and snowball recruitment techniques. The outcomes were that both Asian and Latinx students experienced a sense of duty and rely on family to earn a doctoral degree. Asian students feel pressure to succeed by their families and Latinx students rely on “cultural capital” to succeed. Most participants desired shorter timeframes for feedback and some synchronous contact, which could impact time to completion, decrease attrition, and may improve cohesiveness perceptions. (40 minutes)

Supported by a Laureate Education David A. Wilson Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning research grant.
