Abstract

Tibet has unique and complex medical traditions. Tibetan medicine is a holistic combination of physical and spiritual diagnosis, ancient practices, and holistic treatment. Practice is deeply intertwined with Buddhist thought and physical illness is inseparable from social, mental, and spiritual illness. The Tibetan medical system goes beyond the studies of anatomy, pathophysiology, and pharmacology; their dynamic philosophy is a guide to right living. The patient has a responsibility to pursue their own spiritual growth through learning and introspection, personal responsibility for health and disease prevention is stressed. The Tibetan childbirth experience illustrates the uniqueness of Tibetan practices.
