Abstract
Nurse burnout has emerged as a critical issue, impacting staff retention, job satisfaction, and the quality of patient care. The focus of this integrative review was to evaluate available literature to determine strategies that can be implemented to mitigate nurse burnout and improve nurse well-being in a large urban hospital. This integrative review is based on 20 articles published within the past 5 years related to comprehensive strategies aimed at mitigating burnout, enhancing nurse well-being, and improving retention rates. The integrative review was guided by Maslach’s Burnout Inventory. The key constructs of this theory include assessing the prevalence of nursing burnout, identifying contributing factors, implementing targeted interventions, and evaluating their effectiveness in improving staff retention and well-being. The three themes that emerged from the literature that answered the review question were managerial and organizational responsibilities with the subthemes engage team members and prioritize nurses’ concern and well-being. The second theme is burnout mitigation strategies with the subthemes improve nurse staffing ratios, offer flexible scheduling, and mental health resources. The last theme is stress management strategies with the subthemes respect, inclusivity, work-life balance, and communication. The recommendation that was derived from these themes represents actionable strategies for healthcare organizations to reduce nurse burnout, improve retention, and support the overall well-being of nursing staff. Positive social change includes improved nurse retention contributing to workforce sustainability, promoting public awareness of nurse well-being and mental health, improving health equity through a sustainable workforce, and influencing healthcare policies to support nurse well-being.
