Abstract
Even though there are many modalities put in place to manage diabetes and its complications, there have been many barriers to reducing the complications associated with diabetes in health care institutions. In this educational intervention to reduce diabetes and its complications, a staff education program was implemented to enhance staff knowledge about diabetes and the complications associated with it. The staff education program was implemented at a community-based clinic for a DNP-prepared nurse, three RNs, and five medical assistants (MAs) working at the clinic. A pretest and a posttest were administered to assess the impact of the educational session. The combined pretest and posttest scores were examined using the normalized learning gain (NLG) formula. The NLG of 0.857 equated to an 85.7% advancement in learning, which was a moderate learning gain. This showed that the participants improved their understanding about diabetes and the complications associated with it. The learning acquired through this educational intervention may promote medical quality, confidence in one’s career, and the standard of care. The nursing implications related to this DNP implementation project include enhanced patient outcome and the promotion of social change, equity, and acceptance by affirming uncomplicated, general knowledge and social transformation influencing the overall quality and outcomes of the health care environment.
