Abstract

The increasing number of cyberattacks on healthcare organizations has highlighted significant vulnerabilities, particularly in medical device security. These vulnerabilities pose substantial risks to patient safety, clinical operations, and organizational finances. The aim of this integrative review was to explore strategies in cybersecurity asset management to ensure the safety and security of Class II medical devices in hospitals. A comprehensive review of current literature published between 2019 and 2024 was conducted to identify effective cybersecurity strategies and their implementation in healthcare settings. Risk assessment and management, device life cycle management, organizational alignment and collaboration, and governance and accountability were the four main themes that emerged. Additionally, patient safety and care, workforce challenges, purchasing and procurement, cross-functional collaboration, role of stakeholders, regulatory compliance, and proactive approach and continuous improvement emerged as subthemes. Findings indicated that a multilayered approach and proactive risk management strategies rooted in continuous quality improvement frameworks are essential for mitigating cybersecurity risks associated with Class II medical devices. Implementing comprehensive and robust cybersecurity asset management strategies is crucial for enhancing patient safety, improving clinical outcomes, and maintaining operational integrity in healthcare organizations, all of which are critical to positive social change within the healthcare industry.
