2016 Walden University Research Symposium
Walden University
Welcome to the 2016 Walden University Research Symposium. The Walden University Research Symposium is an annual event that showcases research projects from our academic community, especially work by our recent graduates. The presentations at a symposium appear in two different formats. Poster presentations provide an opportunity for researchers to engage with all individuals attending the symposium and potentially to network with other interested researchers. Using a roundtable presentation format, a select group of researchers is available for interactive discussions of their work, with handouts and visual materials available to support the discussion. This year’s roundtable presenters are focused specifically on the theme of effective use of existing data for secondary analysis. As happens each year, we see a wide range of research being conducted at Walden by our faculty members and our doctoral students. This research diversity logically reflects the diversity of programs being offered at Walden, but all have a shared focus on supporting positive social change. Usually, I try to identify a theme or two in the presentations as we review them. This year, what struck me most was the growing use of existing and operational data to answer important research questions: from publicly accessible databases to behavioral traces in the workplace. Our roundtables also align with this theme. Another distinct focus in some projects was on efficiency of operation, from delivering health care in the present to business planning for future. Again this year, we have included a Meet-and-Greet area in symposium. The editors from each of the five academic journals supported by Walden University are in attendance. If you are interested in these publication venues, you can get any questions answered. We also have Dr. Molly Lauck from the Office for Research and Sponsored Programs available to discuss the Research Dissemination Support Program. The “magic” of a research symposium can be found in the interactions between presenters and audience, however. So, please, don’t be shy—step up, ask questions, make comments, and enjoy the experience.

2015 Walden University Research Symposium
Walden University
Welcome to the 2015 Walden University Research Symposium. A Walden tradition for several years, the Research Symposium is an annual event where we are able to showcase research projects from our academic community, especially work by our recent graduates. The presentations at a symposium appear in two different formats. Poster presentations provide an opportunity for researchers to engage with all individuals attending the symposium and potentially to network with other interested researchers. Using a roundtable presentation format, a select group of research teams is available for interactive discussions of their work, with handouts and visual materials available to support the discussion. This year’s roundtable presenters are focused specifically on creative and novel solutions to the challenges facing researchers, thus continuing the theme from the 2015 Research Colloquium in January. As you will see from the abstracts in this program—one of the largest groups that we have had over the years—the research being conducted at the university is quite diverse. Beyond their shared focus on positive social change, I was most struck by the timeliness of the research topics, including improving the effectiveness and delivery of healthcare, responding to the increasingly complex world of public education, reaching beyond the borders of the United States, and addressing public health concerns from avian flu to Ebola. For 2015, we have also expanded the Meet-and-Greet area of the symposium. The editors from each of the five academic journals supported by Walden University are in attendance. If you are interested in these publication venues, you can get any questions answered. We also have members of our Institutional Review Board in attendance, along with colleagues to discuss our Research Dissemination Support (RDS) Program and our institutional repository, ScholarWorks. The “magic” of a research symposium can be found in the interactions between presenters and audience, however. So, please don’t be shy—step up, ask questions, make comments, and enjoy the experience.

2014 Walden University Research Symposium
Walden University
Welcome to the 2014 Walden University Research Symposium. National Harbor may be a new location for the research symposium this year, but we are still excited to be able to showcase research projects from our academic community, including work by our recent graduates. The presentations at this symposium appear in two different formats. Poster presentations provide an opportunity for researchers to engage with all individuals attending the symposium and potentially to network with other interested researchers. Within the roundtable presentation format, a select group of researchers will be available for interactive discussions of their work, with handouts and visual materials available to support the discussion. This year’s roundtable presenters are particularly interested in getting feedback on their in-progress projects. For this symposium, we continue to see the diversity of research being conducted at the university. What is particularly striking for this group of presenters is the range of their populations of interests—from women studying robotics to samesex parents, from the Amish community to members of the military, from cancer survivors to users of mobile banking, and so many more! The theme that ties them together, however, is their focus on positive social change. Be sure to note that editors from each of the four research journals that are supported by Walden University are in attendance. If you are interested in these publication venues, you can get any questions answered. The "magic" of a research symposium can be found in the interactions between presenters and audience. So, please don’t be shy—step up, ask questions, make comments, and enjoy the experience.

2013 Walden University Research Symposium
Walden University
Welcome to the 2013 Walden University Research Symposium. Again this year we are excited to be able to showcase research projects from our academic community, including work by our recent graduates, in two different formats. Poster presentations provide an opportunity for researchers to engage with all individuals attending the symposium and potentially to network with other interested researchers. Within the roundtable presentation format, a select group of researchers will be available for interactive discussions of their work, with handouts and visual materials available to support the discussion. The topics and approaches are diverse as usual, but this year we see more research being conducted outside of the United States. The roundtables sessions at this symposium are of particular note, however. This summer we are continuing with the theme from our Research Colloquium in January. Each roundtable highlights research that examines and supports translations and implementations of educational practices from the face-to-face to the online environment. We feel all attendees will find something of relevance to their own work. Also, be sure to note that editors from each of the four research journals that are supported by Walden University will be in attendance. If you are interested in these publication venues, you can get any questions answered. Finally, for the first time, the Research Symposium is now included on the slate of events for graduates who are in town for the ceremony. The "magic" of a research symposium can be found in the interactions between presenters and audience. So, please don’t be shy—step up, ask questions, make comments, and enjoy the experience. We also encourage you to use the Contacts page at the end of this program to record key connections that you will make at this event.

2012 Walden University Summer Research Symposium
Walden University
Welcome to the 2012 Walden University Summer Research Symposium, which is being held during the university faculty meeting for the first time. This positioning provides an opportunity for more of our academic community to experience the symposium and makes it more convenient for some of our newest researchers to participate. The topics for this symposium remain as interesting and varied as in the past and include some of our evaluation studies and thought leadership efforts. Speaking of new researchers, we have presentations on capstone projects representing nearly all the doctoral programs at Walden University—and in spite of the variety, each offers a distinct contribution in affecting positive social change. The equally diverse research presented by our faculty and staff members includes a few projects devoted to data-driven improvements to the academic process. Of special note, a small group of presenters has returned to the symposium to update the community on the status of their long-term, grant-supported research projects. Consistent with previous symposia, we offer two formats for the presentation of research. Poster presentations provide an opportunity for researchers to engage with all individuals attending the symposium and potentially to network with other interested researchers. Within the roundtable presentation format, a select group of researchers will be available for interactive discussions of their work, with handouts and visual materials available to support the discussion. The “magic” of a research symposium can be found in the interactions between presenters and audience. So, please don’t be shy—step up, ask questions, make comments, and enjoy the experience. We also encourage you to use the Contacts page at the end of this program to record key connections that you will make at this event.

2012 Walden University Winter Research Symposium
Walden University
Welcome to the Walden University Winter 2012 Research Symposium in Miami, Fla. In keeping with the tradition, this symposium showcases the work of faculty members, students, and our newest graduates, all of whom have been working on a wide range of research topics and areas of inquiry. Each symposium is a little different, however, and it is not hard to see distinct themes in the topics that are being presented and discussed this evening. First, an increasing number of graduates and faculty members from our professional doctorate programs are participating in the symposium, and as a result, we see more projects that address problems in practice through local data and evidence. Second, for this symposium, we have a somewhat larger-than-normal percentage of new graduates, representing nearly all of the doctoral programs. Finally, several faculty members have returned to the symposium to update our academic community on their ongoing projects, many of which have been funded by the university. Consistent with previous symposia, we offer two formats for the presentation of research. Posters provide researchers an opportunity to engage with all individuals attending the symposium and potentially to network with other interested researchers. Within the roundtable format, a select group of researchers will be available for interactive discussions of their work, with handouts and visual materials offered to support the discussion. The “magic” of a research symposium can be found in the interactions between presenters and audience. So, please don’t be shy—step up, ask questions, make comments, and enjoy the experience. 2011 Walden University Summer Research Symposium
Walden University
Welcome to the 2011 Walden University Summer Research Symposium and to the campus of the University of Minnesota. Over the years, our symposia have showcased a diverse range of research from our faculty, students, and graduates; and this year is no different. What is new is that we are excited to welcome our first graduates of Walden’s Doctor of Business Administration (D.B.A. ) program to the symposium. The topics for this symposium demonstrate the breadth and depth of the research currently being conducted at Walden. Projects represent studies in both actual and virtual communities, with foci on work, education, and healthcare applications. One theme that emerged in this group of presentations involves ways to support the people doing the hard work of effecting social change, including individuals in law enforcement, health services, clinical settings, and educational environments. Although some of these projects have been funded through internal grants, many projects report cutting-edge findings from doctoral capstones, conducted by Walden students. Consistent with previous symposia, we offer two formats for the presentation of research. Posters give the researchers a chance to engage with all individuals attending the symposium and potentially to network with other interested researchers. Within the roundtable format, a select group of researchers will be available for interactive discussions of their work, offering handouts and visual materials offered support the discussion. The “magic” of a research symposium can be found in the interactions between presenters and audience. So, please don’t be shy— step up, ask questions, make comments, and enjoy the experience. 2011 Walden University Winter Research Symposium
Walden University
Welcome to the 2011 Walden University Winter Research Symposium and to our first symposium held in Miami! As you will see, this symposium offers a range of research from our faculty, students, and graduates. While some of these projects have been funded through internal grants, many projects report cutting- edge findings from doctoral capstones, conducted by Walden students. Further, several of our colleagues are discussing research in its formative stages.
As before, we offer two formats for the presentation of research. Posters give the researchers a chance to engage with all individuals attending the symposium and potentially to network with other interested researchers. Within the roundtable format, a select group of researchers will be available for interactive discussions of their work, with handouts and visual materials available to support the discussion. We encourage you to use the "Contacts" page at the end of this program to record key connections that you will make at this event.
The research topics this year are as diverse as the methodologies used to study them. One common research theme in this symposium, however, revolves around the notion of "challenges," such as those faced by children globally, by oppressed individuals in the United States, and by educators who instruct an increasingly diverse student population.
The strength of the symposium lies in the interactions between presenters and audience. So, please don't be shy-step up, ask questions, make comments, and enjoy the experience.
