Major Depression among African American Women at an Historically Black College in the United States

Shani Collins Woods

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine what variables influenced major depression among African American college women at a Historically Black University in a Southern state. A sample of 78 African American college women between the ages of 17 through 23 participated in the study. Nine of the 20 items on the Beck Depression Inventory-II were significant precursors to major depression. The findings indicate that indicate that African American college women are presently at risk for major depression.
