Abstract
Six air pollutants that negatively affect the expectant mother and developing fetus are examined: carbon monoxide, cleaning products, ozone, paint fumes, particle pollution, and smoking. Such substances are common in women’s lives and as a result, women may not realize the adverse implications of exposure to them. Exposure to these substances may result in preterm birth, low birth weight, birth deficits, as well as other short term and long-term effects in the fetus. Suggestions for educating expectant parents are addressed.
