Abstract
The United States of America is the fourth most populous country in the world and spends more on health care than any other nation in the world, yet health outcomes remain poor. Increasing breastfeeding rates would help reduce negative health outcomes because breastfeeding is shown to reduce the risk of many chronic and infectious diseases while improving quality of life and familial bonds. This paper describes some of the barriers related to increasing breastfeeding rates and provides information useful to support breastfeeding choices for those attending prenatal classes.
