Abstract
The academic field of humanities focuses on research, pedagogy, and artifacts concerning human creativity and cultural production. Far more than merely a digital equivalent of traditional face-to-face humanities education, humanities education in the online world offers distinct opportunities and challenges, including the possibilities of worldwide human access and/or participation, either synchronously or asynchronously; indefinite archiving and retrieval of research materials; continuous or intermittent conversations among interested academicians and artists; and increased visibility of and access to the field of humanities and related teaching and learning experiences. This entry describes the origins, development, opportunities, challenges, and cultural relevance of online humanities education.
