Abstract

Approximately 10% of all pregnant women suffer from mental illness during their pre-natal period, with the most common type of mental illness being clinical depression (WHO, 2017). Research has identified that women with a serious mental illness (SMI) during their pregnancy have a higher risk rate for late entry into pre-natal care, complications during pregnancy, and poor birth outcomes.
