Abstract

Because many Native American peoples live in areas far removed from many institutions of higher education and do not wish to leave their peoples’ reservations, online education can be particularly useful in enabling them to pursue their educational goals. This entry examines the role of online education among Native American peoples. Online education is a form of distributed learning designed to reach out to students to meet them where they are. When taking into account the broad-scale effort that many institutions have made to continue to connect with learners, in recent years, tribal colleges and universities (TCUs)—institutions of higher learning controlled and operated by Native American tribes—have also expanded to offer online education to their students.
