Abstract
Music and the arts play an important role in human development, enhancing the growth of cognitive, emotional, and psychomotor pathways. Rich experiences with the arts at an early age provide a higher quality of human experience throughout a person's lifetime. The purpose of this chapter is to apply developments in brain research to young children's music experiences. We are at the threshold of using developing technology for studying how the brain functions and analyzing which teaching strategies are most effective with young children to maximize our efforts. Current studies hold the promise of a fuller understanding of the process of learning, guiding our profession in the development and use of more effective teaching strategies.
