Abstract
Falls among residents in long-term care facilities are a concern for families and facility management. Falls inflict pain, discomfort, and head trauma, causing fractures. In nursing practice, falls are nursing-sensitive indicators that reflect the quality of nursing care and patient safety. There is a need to bridge the gap and increase staff knowledge on how to prevent falls in the facility. The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project focused on increased nursing staff knowledge through an evidence-based education program and the implementation of an evidence-based practice education program. The DNP project practice question was about nursing staff in long-term care facilities: Does an evidence-based fall prevention education program, compared with routine nurses’ knowledge of falls prevention, improve nurses? knowledge of fall prevention and confidence in patient safety. Current peer-reviewed articles on evidence-based fall prevention were reviewed to guide the project. Twenty-five participants attended the lectures in two different sessions of the program. Pre-test questions and post-test questions were given to the participants. The participants’ results showed a pre-test average score of 52.20% and a post-test score of 89.60%, with an average participant gain of 80% after the staff education program. The result indicates an increase in knowledge of falls prevention in the facility. The recommendation to the facility is to conduct an annual education program for nurses and new hire nurses. The project is positive and supports social change, inclusion, equity, and diversity. Increase staff confidence in fall prevention, patient safety, and the quality of nursing care.
