Abstract

This project was a staff education initiative designed to improve staff knowledge of medication adherence at an adult psychiatric outpatient clinic. Addressing this matter is critical because it directly impacts the quality of patient care. The practice focus question was: Among psychiatric mental health staff in a behavioral health facility, what is the impact of a staff educational program on teaching medication adherence to patients on the staff’s knowledge? The purpose of this staff education project was to improve staff knowledge of medication adherence by equipping them with the tools and strategies needed to help patients manage their treatment plans effectively. The analytical strategies used were a pre- and posttest quiz consisting of 12 questions. I used Microsoft Excel and SPSS to compare and track test scores and analyze changes in participants’ knowledge levels. The findings demonstrated that the educational intervention improved staff knowledge of medication adherence by 15.4%. PowerPoint presentations, educational materials, and evaluation tools were used. Recommendations include annual staff training sessions on medication adherence and during onboarding for new staff. Implications for nursing include enhancing therapeutic relationships and improving staff communication with patients. In conclusion, improving staff knowledge of medication adherence is a significant strategy that yields substantial benefits for the organization and enhances overall patient outcomes. Improving staff knowledge of medication adherence promotes inclusion and equity by reducing disparities in psychiatric outcomes, enhances diversity responsive care through culturally sensitive education, and drives positive social change by advancing mental health workforce competency and empowering patients.
