Abstract

This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) executive leadership system improvement project addresses provider-identified gaps in dietary education for Spanish-speaking patients with diabetes, which may contribute to suboptimal glycemic control and diabetes self-management. A comprehensive review of evidence from CINAHL Complete, PubMed/MEDLINE, and Cochrane supports the use of culturally tailored, evidence-based dietary education to improve diabetes knowledge, self-management behaviors, and health outcomes. The project proposes the development and implementation of a standardized dietary education program using culturally appropriate dietary exchange tools within an outpatient clinic. The initiative aims to improve staff confidence, adoption, and consistency in delivering culturally responsive diabetes education while reducing language barriers and promoting health equity for Spanish-speaking patients. The guiding practice-focused question is: Will the development and implementation of an evidence-based dietary education program utilizing culturally appropriate dietary exchange tools for Spanish-speaking patients with diabetes improve staff adoption, confidence, and consistency in delivering culturally responsive diabetes education within an outpatient clinic? Expected outcomes include increased staff confidence and competence, greater use of standardized educational resources, improved consistency in nutrition counseling, and successful integration of culturally responsive dietary education into routine clinical practice. By standardizing evidence-based, culturally appropriate diabetes education, this project is designed to strengthen nursing practice, support organizational quality improvement goals, and promote equitable, patient-centered care for an underserved population.
