Abstract
This doctor of nursing practice (DNP) project was a staff education initiative designed to address the practice problem of a lack of evidence-based approaches to patient education on medication compliance in a primary care clinic. A literature search was conducted using PubMed, CINAHL, MEDLINE, and the Cochrane Library search engines/databases, revealing nine studies that supported the premise that patient education can promote medication compliance. A practice-focused question underpinning this project was: Will staff education on evidence-based methods for educating patients about the importance of medication adherence result in increased staff knowledge? Baseline staff knowledge and educational needs were obtained using a pre-survey. A post-survey was conducted after the educational intervention to assess knowledge gained. Comparison of pre- and post-education survey scores was completed using descriptive statistics. The mean pre-education survey score was 82.5%, while the mean post-education survey score increased to 97.5%, exhibiting an improvement in knowledge following the educational intervention. Recommendations include incorporating medication adherence education into annual staff training, providing ongoing competency assessments, using evidence-based patient education materials, and implementing periodic reinforcement sessions to sustain knowledge gains. This project supports nursing practice by elevating staff awareness. It promotes positive social change by engaging patients in their care and supports diversity and inclusion in healthcare by delivering a standard of care to all patients.
