Abstract

This Doctor of Nursing Practice capstone project presents the development and evaluation of a clinical practice guideline (CPG) for the assessment and management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in adults. The project addresses the ongoing challenge of diabetes-related complications and hospitalizations, highlighting the critical role of personalized patient education and the integration of smartphone technology for home monitoring. Central to this initiative was the question of whether an expert panel would endorse an evidence-based guideline for diabetes monitoring using innovative technology, as evaluated by the AGREE II tool. A robust review of the literature supported the guideline’s development, with high-quality evidence confirming the benefits of smartphone technology in enhancing patient engagement and improving glycemic control. The expert panel, comprising clinicians and stakeholders, assessed the CPG across the AGREE II tool’s six domains. Results demonstrated high scores in scope and purpose, editorial independence, and clarity of presentation, while identifying areas for improvement in applicability and stakeholder involvement. The findings underscore the guideline’s potential to standardize and elevate diabetes care, promote proactive patient self-management, and foster positive social change by addressing health disparities. Recommendations include refining the guideline based on panel feedback and establishing mechanisms for ongoing evaluation. Overall, this project provides a model for integrating technological innovation into clinical guidelines, with implications for improved healthcare outcomes at both local and broader levels.
