Abstract
The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project aims to fill the gaps in the management of knee osteoarthritis (OA) in adults aged 40 to 75 years in a primary care practice. Knee OA is a common chronic disease that significantly impacts pain, mobility, and quality of life. Although there is empirical evidence that nonpharmacological interventions, including exercise, weight control, and self-management education, are effective, these methods are not consistently used in clinical practice, and pharmacologic treatment continues to be used. The project was designed to inform healthcare personnel about evidence-based nonpharmacological strategies to improve patient outcomes and reduce reliance on medications. The project aimed to design and implement a staff education program to enhance knowledge and confidence in the use of nonpharmacological treatments for knee OA. The evidence-based guidelines for the educational intervention focused on strategies such as exercise therapy, patient education, and weight management to improve functional mobility and reduce pain and medication use. Data were collected using pre- and post-education knowledge tests, and participant responses showed significant improvements in knowledge and confidence. The participants reported being more prepared to teach patients and to incorporate nonpharmacological methods into practice. The findings of this DNP project show that well-organized, evidence-based staff education can help close the research-practice gap, enhancing patient-centered care and clinical decision-making while minimizing the use of pharmacologic treatments. To continue, it is recommended that the educational program be incorporated into regular employee training to further maintain and improve patient care and outcomes. The project can contribute to positive social change by promoting more sustainable, equitable, and effective approaches to pain management in healthcare.
