Abstract
With posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) prevalence increasing and telehealth becoming more integrated into mainstream healthcare practice, it is critical to ensure that nurses are adequately trained to deliver evidence-based, trauma-informed care through digital modalities. The identified practice problem centered on the limited telehealth competency among nurses, particularly in communication strategies, confidence, and clinical readiness for PTSD care via virtual platforms. This doctoral project was a staff education initiative designed to enhance the telehealth delivery of trauma-informed care for patients with PTSD. The purpose of this project was to evaluate whether the structured educational intervention improved nurses’ knowledge and confidence in delivering telehealth services to patients with PTSD. Nurses (N = 13) participated in the education and completed 12 multiple-choice knowledge questions and eight Likert-scale self-assessment items both before and after the training. Descriptive statistical analysis was used to calculate knowledge gain scores and improvement in confidence levels. Results showed an increase in knowledge and perceived competence. The mean knowledge score increased from 62.5% pretest to 87.5% posttest. Similarly, the average Likert scale scores across all eight items increased from 2.8 (neutral) to 4.3 (confident), demonstrating strong gains in confidence to provide care. These findings indicated that focused telehealth education may significantly improve knowledge and clinical readiness and confidence among nursing staff. The implications of the project include enhancing patient outcomes, improving access to specialized care for PTSD, and reducing health disparities in rural underserved populations, thereby promoting positive social change.
