Abstract

Debriefing is a critical reflective practice in healthcare that facilitates team learning, promotes psychological safety, and supports quality improvement following clinical events. Despite its recognized value, healthcare professionals report limited training and a lack of confidence in participating in debriefing. I conducted this staff education project to increase staff knowledge and confidence related to effective debriefing practices by delivering targeted in-person education and measuring outcomes using a pre- and post-intervention knowledge and confidence assessment. The education focused on the essential elements of effective debriefing and use of a standardized data collection form. Participants completed a preintervention assessment measuring their knowledge and confidence related to debriefing. Following the in-person education session, participants completed an identical postintervention assessment. I analyzed the quantitative data from the online assessment platform to evaluate the education’s effectiveness. The structured in-person educational sessions resulted in a measurable increase in staff knowledge and confidence in both conducting and participating in debriefings. The improvement in participant knowledge and confidence supports enhanced nursing practice through better communication, psychological safety, and leadership development while also promoting positive social change by fostering inclusive, equitable, and reflective team environments. As a result, incorporating debriefing education into onboarding and ongoing professional development is recommended to standardize practice, enhance team dynamics, and support patient safety. Debriefing education contributes to positive social change as well by promoting open communication, building trust, shared learning, and empowering staff engagement.
