Abstract

This DNP project implemented an educational module on the use of continuous glucose monitoring devices (CGM) to increase staff knowledge of diabetic care and glycemic control for the diabetic population in a community healthcare clinic. Diabetes mellitus is a significant health concern that poses a substantial challenge to the community and the American healthcare system with a higher burden of diabetes complications found among the low income, uninsured, and minority populations. Poor glycemic control is a major health issue that significantly increases the risk of developing diabetes-related complications such as heart and kidney diseases, and obesity. The adoption of CGM devices has led to significant improvements in glycemic control, demonstrating their potential benefits in diabetes management, yet a staff knowledge gap remained in its use. This DNP project consisted of recruiting participants at one healthcare clinic to participate by viewing an educational module on CGM devices. Pre- and post-assessment tests consisted of 12 multiple choice questions. The tests were used to evaluate staff knowledge and statistical analysis of the results was completed using Excel. Ten clinic staff members completed both the pre- and post-tests. The overall average results demonstrated a 51 percentage score increase on average (p < .001) in the selection of correct answers from the pre-test (36%) to the post-test (87%). Positive social change occurs when staff are educated about the use of CGMs and provide support and guidance to patients and families, promoting healthier living.
