Abstract
Home health agencies continue to grapple with challenges in nurse staffing and workforce management. This integrative review explored effective strategies to address these challenges and improve operational efficiency. The review focused on identifying best practices for enhancing nurse recruitment, retention, and scheduling processes within home health settings. Guided by the transformational leadership framework, the study examined 30 empirical and theoretical articles published over the past 5 years. The selected articles were further assessed for relevance and quality using the Johns Hopkins evidence-based practice model. Through an in-depth thematic analysis, five primary themes and 10 supporting subthemes emerged. The key themes identified included proactive workforce planning, flexible staffing strategies, fair workload distribution, financial incentives and competitive benefits, and organizational support. These were further supported by 10 subthemes: long-term staffing strategies, data-driven staffing solutions, workplace flexibility, dynamic scheduling, optimized routing and scheduling, priority-based scheduling, retention bonuses, tuition reimbursement, mental health and burnout prevention, and continuity of care. This review offered a comprehensive foundation for evidence-based improvements in nurse staffing and workforce management in home health. By implementing these recommendations through a transformational leadership framework, home health agencies may cultivate a stable and engaged nursing workforce capable of delivering consistent, high-quality patient care while driving positive social change within their organizations and communities.
