Abstract
Summary This staff education initiative was designed to improve healthcare professionals’ knowledge of managing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in individuals with psychiatric disorders. This population faced a significantly higher prevalence of T2DM and experienced poorer health outcomes due to fragmented and inadequate care. The practice problem was a staff knowledge deficit in managing patients with T2DM. The practice-focused question that guided the project was: How can an educational intervention enhance nursing staff’s knowledge in managing T2DM in patients with psychiatric disorders? The primary purpose was implementing an evidence-based training program to improve staff knowledge. The project was implemented using both printed and virtual PowerPoint presentations. Pre- and post-intervention surveys were distributed to assess changes in staff knowledge. Surveys were collected confidentially by the front desk coordinator, and the data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results showed a notable increase in knowledge, with the mean pre-survey score of 54% and the mean post-survey score of 84%. The project impacted nursing practice by providing nurses with the knowledge to care for this population of patients. This increased nurses’ confidence in delivering care and promoted positive social change. The project addressed the gap in practice by emphasizing targeted interventions to improve the quality of diabetes care among psychiatric populations, highlighting inclusive nursing practice. The success of this project highlighted the importance of structured education in fostering nursing advocacy, equity, and excellence in care for an underserved population to promote a positive social change.
