Abstract
Walden University College of Nursing This is to certify that the doctoral study by Euphemia Mah has been found to be complete and satisfactory in all respects, and that any and all revisions required by the review committee have been made. Review Committee Dr. Corinne Wheeler, Committee Chairperson, Nursing Faculty Dr. Robert McWhirt, Committee Member, Nursing Faculty Chief Academic Officer and Provost Sue Subocz, Ph.D. Walden University 2025 Summary Poor adherence to medication regimens among patients who have a mental illness leads to multiple adverse outcomes, which include symptom exacerbation, decreased quality of life, and repeated hospitalizations. To address this practice problem, this project implemented a staff education program for healthcare staff at a community-based mental health clinic in Maryland. The goal was to increase staff knowledge of evidence-based patient adherence techniques. As part of the training program, staff received evidence-based strategy instruction that covered cognitive-behavioral therapy methods, motivational interviewing techniques, and digital medicine applications. A pretest and posttest questionnaire consisted of 10 multiple-choice questions, and data were analyzed using the learning gain percentages formula. Among the 15 participants who completed pre- and post-test assessments, the mean score increased from 62.53 to 88.53, resulting in a learning gain of 70%. This indicates that the educational program effectively showed early signs of improved knowledge levels among staff members after the educational content delivery, indicating they gained better preparation for adherence strategy implementation within clinical practice. The application demonstrates promise for enhancing medication adherence results and promoting culturally sensitive medical interventions for all patients, improving equity in practice, and promoting social evolution standards. The initiative serves various social transformation aims as it works to generate equitable mental health results for communities and offers culturally appropriate treatment for diverse patient groups.
