Abstract
Nurse leader rounding (NLR) is essential in most healthcare organizations as NLR has been associated with improved nurse recruitment and retention, increased patient satisfaction, and increased quality of care. In the local organization, leadership identified that there was a lack of knowledge and awareness of NLR among nurse managers and charge nurses. Thus, the purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project was to determine if an education intervention focused on structured NLR increased knowledge and awareness among charge nurses and nurse managers. Thirty-seven individuals were invited to participate in the educational intervention. With the support of leadership, 34 (N = 34) individuals attended the education intervention. The average age of the participants was 39.65 years (SD = 12.79) with 88% of the participants (n = 30) identified as female; 9% (n = 3) identified as male; and 3% (n = 1) preferred not to respond. Eighty-two percent of the participants (n = 28) identified their role as a charge nurse and 18% (n = 6) identified their role as a nurse manager. The mean pretest score for knowledge was 8.71 (SD = 1.14) with a range of 5 to 10 and the mean posttest score was 8.65 (SD = 0.73) with a range of 7 to 10. Using a Wilcoxon Signed Rank test to estimate the data, there was no statistically significant difference between the pretest and posttest scores (z = -0.50, p > 0.05). Participants were then asked to rate their awareness of three content areas regarding NLR using a Likert scale. A Wilcoxon signed-rank test showed a statistical difference between pretest and posttest scores among the content areas, indicating increased participant awareness. It is hoped that the increased knowledge and awareness among the participants translate into practice and ultimately lead to positive patient, provider, and organizational outcomes.
