Abstract

This project was a quality improvement staff education program to address the increase in hospital-acquired infections in the project facility. The hospital administrator identified that staff were overwhelmed and may not be consistently implementing appropriate infection control practices. If infection control practices are not addressed in hospitals system, there would be a much higher rate of hospital-acquired diseases among hospitalized patients and the staff. A staff education program about evidence-based strategies relating to infection control prevention was implemented to increase the nurses’ knowledge about strategies to decrease the spread of infection in the project facility. Eleven registered nurses participated in the education program, completing the pretest prior to the program and a posttest after completing the program. I analyzed the data from their tests with descriptive statistics and t-test analysis using the Microsoft Excel Statistical Analysis program. The participants’ mean score for the pretest was 5.0, and the mean score for the posttest was 9.5, with a p <.001. The nurses’ knowledge about evidenced-based strategies to prevent and decrease infection in the facility increased significantly after the education program. Increasing nurses’ knowledge to prevent infection has the potential for positive social change by decreasing the rate of infection in the facility and improve the care provided to patients and their quality of life. . I recommend presenting the education program to all new employees during the onboarding process, allowing all health care staff to access and benefit from knowledge gained, promoting benefit to all patients and leading to more holistic infection prevention practices in this health care hospital
