Abstract

Burnout is becoming more common among nurses, which has a negative impact on the well-being of nurses, patients, and organizations. The practice problem for this DNP project was the need for more awareness about burnout and associated strategies to address nurse burnout among outpatient nurses in a psychiatric clinic. This DNP project was a staff education program to teach nurses how to identify burnout in themselves while offering them mindfulness techniques to prevent or mitigate burnout. This project’s guiding practice-focused question and framework was, “Will a staff education program on mindfulness techniques to prevent burnout lead to nurses’ identification of mindfulness techniques and increase their use of these techniques?” A pre- and posttest questionnaire was used to collect baseline data on nurses’ knowledge about burnout, mindfulness techniques, and their current use of mindfulness. A paired sample dependent t test was utilized to compare the pre- and posttest results, and 10 participants completed the questionnaires. An average pretest score of 49% demonstrated a lower initial awareness of nurse burnout. After the educational session, participants scored an average of 85% on the posttest. The p value of 0.000037 was statistically significant, indicating that the nurses improved their knowledge of the signs, symptoms, impact, and use of mindfulness techniques to reduce nurse burnout. The DNP project will benefit nursing practice because its findings can serve as a foundation for creating policies and standards for regular training on nurse burnout. Incorporating burnout prevention techniques via training programs contributes to social change, diversity, and equity by assisting nurses in improving their well-being and resilience and feel included, irrespective of their beliefs.
