Abstract
This quality improvement staff education DNP project was developed to address psychiatric patients' nonadherence to medications in this project setting. Poor adherence to medication has been regarded as a primary cause of psychiatric deterioration in outpatient settings. The project was developed to mitigate the negative impact of non-adherence in psychiatric patients in the clinic. In this quality improvement project, an education program to increase nurses' knowledge of evidence-based strategies to improve patients with mental health illnesses adherence to their treatment regimen was developed and implemented. Seven individuals completed the education program. Participants completed a pretest before engaging in the program and a posttest afterward. The pretest was 65.7 and the posttest was 85.7 with a statistically significant difference, p value = .001. The results may facilitate beneficial outcomes for nurses, patients, and the institution. The results indicated an increase in nurses' knowledge regarding strategies for educating patients on self-care practices related to medication adherence. Educating patients with psychiatric illnesses about adherence to their medication regimens has the potential to enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion. Enhancing comprehension of follow-up instructions will reduce relapse rates and decrease readmission among this typically stigmatized population. It is advisable to incorporate this educational program for all new nurses during their orientation to the facility.
