Abstract

I developed a quality improvement staff educational program aimed at addressing the inconsistent use of the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) at the project facility, which could adversely affect the quality and continuity of patient care. The need for the program was prompted by the increasing use of telehealth services and the necessity for consistent mental health evaluation tools. I aimed to educate mental health staff about evidence-based practices using the PHQ-9 in telehealth to enhance the quality of care for patients with depression in remote settings. Analytical methods included administering pre- and postintervention tests to measure changes in staff knowledge and usage of the PHQ-9, along with collecting demographic data to understand the diverse backgrounds of the participants. Five participants completed the educational session. Data from the pre-and posttests were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The pretest mean was 80 and the posttest mean was 100, resulting in a mean increase of approximately 20 points in provider knowledge, indicating an improvement in staff understanding and knowledge of PHQ-9 use. The conclusions demonstrate the critical role of structured education in enhancing telehealth competencies among mental health professionals. The potential implications for nursing practice range from improved mental health assessments to enhanced patient outcomes. The program emphasizes the organization’s need for ongoing education to maintain high standards of care and highlights the importance of interprofessional collaboration to improve the consistency of mental health assessments. Additionally, the project supports positive social change by ensuring that mental health services are accessible across diverse patient environments through proficient use of the PHQ-9 via staff education.
