Abstract

Nonprofit organizations periodically conduct strength, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analyses; especially after the disrupting effects of the covid pandemic. A Northern California community-based nonprofit organization, deploys 36 volunteers to support the community. The struggles to maintain an annual budget, primarily through grants and personal contributions, to operate programs. The purpose of this study was to investigate several strategies to build a sustainable annual resource development plan. A SWOT analysis of the organization was to aid in the creation of a resource development plan. This general qualitative case study explored the insight of key volunteers and secondary documents analysis to ensure the generation of funding of more than $300,000. Interviews were conducted among the board directors and the staff within the organization to provide insight into the short- and long-term development strategies. Findings indicated that diversification of resource streams through using creative fundraising approaches and the development of strategic partnerships, the organization can achieve resource sustainability. The findings of this study can facilitate social change by ensuring the maintenance of the financial sustainability and of NPOs and their essential services in the communities.
