Abstract

The dedication to expanding one’s professional skillset and knowledge has driven the pursuit of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) evidence-based practice (EBP) project in healthcare staff education. In fulfillment of the DNP graduation requirements from Walden University’s School of Nursing, the aim of this EBP project was to address an educational need within a federal health care organization’s emergency department (ED). The purpose of the educational project was to develop and implement an orientation program for newly hired intermediate care technicians (ICTs) in the ED. Simulation-based educational activities were incorporated with a flipped classroom model, didactics, and preceptorships guided patient care practice by the ADDIE (analyze, design, develop, implement, evaluate) model and the adult learning theory. The goal of the ICT orientation program was to prepare the ICTs for their patient care roles and responsibilities in the ED through participation in the orientation program. The DNP team evaluated pre- and post-implementation data with descriptive statistical analyses to determine the significance of the orientation program on the learners’ self-report of competence and proficiency performance of clinical skills and patient care. Findings (N = 5) based on a Mann-Whitney U test, supported the benefit of the orientation program on learners' rating of self-competence (U = 0; z = -2.51; and p = .00034). Recommendations for replication of the EBP project with larger volumes of participants, in similar clinical settings, and utilizing the educational models, concepts, and frameworks of this project were endorsed by the DNP project team. The evidence-based staff education will support educational efforts across other clinical care areas to improve the delivery of safe patient care.
