Abstract

The behavioral health organization (BHO) located in the Southern parts of the United States has a problem with increased readmission rates in behavioral health care patients; some are even as early as 30 days from discharge date, increasing funding and resources used. High emergency room visits have been reported, including behavioral health inpatient hospitalizations in the East Coast catchment area. There has been an increase of cost that influences high reimbursement due to the high utilization of services from these behavioral health patients. The purpose of this qualitative case study is to evaluate existing factors connected to the increase in the readmission rate for behavioral health patients. The purpose of the study is to understand behavioral health challenges, particularly the presence of low level of support with increased cases of re-admissions. Health leaders a new strategic plan and protocols to decrease the number of readmitted behavioral health patients commonly experienced because of high emergency room visits and behavioral health inpatient hospitalization. The Baldrige Framework of Excellence is used in this study to improve the organization's performance and establish more sustainability regarding established results.
