Abstract

AbstractThe Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) was created on May 28th, 1975, with the intent of fostering the economic growth of its 15 member-states. In the process of implementing its policies and institutions, the ECOWAS faced decisive challenges, including internal conflicts, asymmetries, migrations and mobility. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact these factors have on the integration of the Republic of Cape Verde, which is the smallest member-state, and formulate conclusions and recommendations that would help the organization to find a path to success. Through the lenses of the dependency theory, this research involved applying the qualitative methodology and a case study approach to conduct a thorough literature review and collecting data that allowed for a deep analysis of the phenomenon. This study involved an in-depth review of the evolution of current policies of the ECOWAS, gains of the organization in terms of peacemaking and peacekeeping, and the need for clarity on matters related to migration, trade, and asymmetries. This study will lead to social change by providing insights into the factors that affect the full integration of Cape Verde into the ECOWAS region.
