Abstract

Cancer rehabilitation includes the assessment and management of cancer treatment toxicities, including pain, functional decline, and reduced quality of life. Discovery science and excellent clinical care are interdependent in the field of cancer rehabilitation, where the median patient age at diagnosis is 66 years. Such work relies on high quality, interdisciplinary team science to improve functional and other outcomes. Examples from Dr. Griffith’s work related to developing a research program that endeavors to attenuate cancer treatment effects will be used to highlight the essential role of collaborations to inform new rehabilitation approaches and to mentor the next generation of scientists who study cancer care. This presentation emphasizes the critical nature of relationship building as part of the scientific effort and has applicability across disciplines. (38 minutes)
