Abstract

Some anxiety is normal for pregnant women, however, when a woman experiences an inability to concentrate; has trouble functioning at work or home; experiences a frequent sense of panic, fear, restlessness; has obsessive thoughts; or does not enjoy things that used to make her happy, it is a cause for concern for childbirth professionals. Prolonged anxiety is associated with preterm birth and low birth weight. A number of alternative treatments may help decrease anxiety, including an adequate diet, meditation, exercise, and childbirth education. Education of both parents may increase partner support and aid in their communication.
