Abstract

This single case study is an exploration of the necessary leadership skills to reduce resistance to organizational changes. Behavioral health leaders (BHLs) frequently implement changes, and poor execution can result in employee burnout, increased turnover, and decreased productivity. The participant population in this study included five BHLs in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. The study included the use of the Baldrige excellence framework as an evidenced-based model to evaluate organizational systems. Data were collected primarily through semistructured interviews and were supplemented by information collected in organizational documents. When the data were analyzed, the emerging themes were communication gaps, a need for implementation planning, and workforce engagement. The findings from this study can impact social change by increasing the knowledge surrounding the leadership skills needed to effectively support employees through a change. When employees embrace needed changes there is higher productivity, morale, and a higher quality of care.
