Abstract
This DNP Project is one designed to educate Occupational Health Staff. As there are varying levels of skills and education of staff working with patients, it is important to identify staff that who can play a large role in helping gather important information to help in treatment decisions early on in the process of patient care. The practice-focused question and the purpose of the project was to answer the following question: will a staff education program for Medical Assistants and Front Desk Staff in an Occupational Health clinic on the utilization of a template to streamline workflow improve their knowledge? Through the use of the educational presentation and pre and post questionnaires to measure knowledge before and after the presentation, the project addressed if knowledge growth was present. Based on the results of the post questionnaire (N=20), there was a noted increase suggesting knowledge gained, based on an average percentage point increase in yes responses post implementation of the educational PowerPoint presentation reaching the projected goal. A series of chi-square tests were conducted in IBM SPSS version 29 to examine differences in “yes” responses between pre- and post-intervention for the 10 questions used. The results confirm that identifying and addressing deficits in knowledge base and skills through education helps to strengthen the ability of the nursing and medical and all staff to provide needed care, help increase efficiency of workflow, and help the organization in reaching some of its projected patient satisfaction and likely corporate goals. Potential implications for nursing practice and for positive social change and diversity, equity, and inclusion are that addressing knowledge needs of staff allows them to be able to provide safer, more competent evidence-based care with improved patient outcomes.
