Abstract
Background: Teach-Back method of education is a simple technique that can be used to check, and correct inaccurate recall of patients’ instructions. It has a great impact on patients’ recall and understanding of discharged information in a healthcare setting and to help minimize hazards such as non-medication adherence, frequent re-hospitalization, and poor self-care/home care (Talevski et al., 2020). Gap in Practice/Problem: “Frequent readmission (30 days Return) of patients in a Rural Psychiatric Center.” The Practice Focus Question: “Does staff education on “teach-back” facilitate the knowledge and confidence level of staff in providing discharged patient education and subsequently minimize frequent rehospitalization?” Proposed type of project: Staff education program in utilizing Teach-Back technique in patients’ education to minimize high rate of frequent readmission. Purpose of Project: To develop and deliver staff education that will improve the knowledge and confidence of nursing staff in utilizing Teach-Back in patient education to potentially reduce frequent readmission. Method: Face to face educational intervention was presented using PowerPoint and handouts. Pretest and posttest implementation data collected via survey and analyzed using bar chart to determine statistical differences in the knowledge and confidence of the nursing staff. Project Outcomes: Nurses’ knowledge and confidence levels increased in using the teach-back method for patient education after staff education implementation. Key words: Teach-back technique, frequent rehospitalization, staff education, literacy, health literacy, Self-efficacy, communication.
