Abstract

The problem addressed in this study was that there were inconsistencies in the research literature and a gap in practice regarding teachers' perspectives on the components of a quality online structure in a digital and media art class during the post-COVID-19 era. Despite evidence of the benefits of remote learning, there was a gap concerning implementation of improved quality online structures. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore the perspectives of digital and media art teachers on their needs for a quality online learning structure in the post-COVID-19 era. The conceptual framework was Davis’s technology acceptance model. Three research questions addressed the teachers’ perspectives on the inconsistencies in quality of the online structure, usefulness of remote learning, and challenges when administering projects and assignments. Data were collected by conducting semistructured interviews with 10 digital and media art class teachers with at least 1 year of experience integrating remote learning in their classroom instruction at a high school in rural southern New Jersey in the United States. Braun and Clarke’s six-step thematic analysis framework yielded five themes: inconsistencies due to time management with students, problems with software programs, design programs needed to be accessible, a need for professional learning communities and professional development, and lack of student motivation caused teacher challenges. Recommendations include a quality online structure to improve the effectiveness of assignments, enhance student engagement, and support teacher training. This study may foster positive social change by demonstrating that by prioritizing quality online structures and teacher training, school leaders can potentially create more equitable learning environments, particularly in creative disciplines like digital and media arts.
