Abstract
The type of project was a clinical practice guideline (CPG) workflow for medication prescriptions. The practice problem was the lack of an evidence-based approach regarding medication prescriptions, resulting in increased errors. It is essential to address this problem to promote safe prescribing, increase team knowledge, and encourage patient safety in the organization and within nursing practice. The practice focused question was the following: Will a clinical practice guideline for medication prescription workflow be approved by experts for use in an outpatient mental health clinic to promote the reduction of errors? The project aimed to seek expert approval of a CPG workflow for medication prescriptions in an outpatient mental health clinic regarding prescribing practices. The analytical strategy used for the approval of the CPG was the AGREE II tool, a framework designed to assess the quality of CPG workflow for medication prescriptions. Four expert panelists with prescribing experience in nursing were selected based on qualification and experience for the assessment of the CPG. All panelists scored 7 out of 7 across all six domains in the AGREE II tool, indicating that the CPG demonstrated the highest standards of quality in areas of scope and purpose, stakeholder involvement, rigor of development, clarity of presentation, applicability, and editorial independence. This project will impact nursing practice by promoting patient safety and ensuring all patients have access to quality care regardless of their background. Using electronic health records (EHRs) and technology through the CPG may reduce bias and discrimination due to centralized patient data.
