Abstract
Process standardization and workflow customization are necessary in the operation of specialty pharmacy systems. Specialty pharmacies provide medications that are often high cost, require special handling, and are used to treat complex medical conditions. The need for both standardization and customization arises from the unique challenges these specialty pharmacies face, including regulatory compliance, patient safety, and the necessity for personalized patient care. The purpose of this study was to identify strategies to minimize workflow disruptions and delays in the transitions between initiating and continuing therapies across the specialty pharmacy continuum of care, leading to recommended evidence-based best practices to achieve efficient workflows. The integration of evidence-based practices rooted in the resource-based theory of competitive advantage and the high-value pharmacy enterprise frameworks is essential for identifying specific indicators within specialty pharmacy operations that can be standardized and monitored. An integrative review of literature published between 2018-2024 was conducted, and thematic analysis identified five key themes: (a) specialty pharmacy operational efficiency and workflow optimization; (b) quality assurance and regulatory compliance; (c) patient centered care; (d) data, reporting, and performance metrics; and (e) integrative and collaborative care. This review can be a reference guide for standard processes and customizable process workflows. By systematically documenting ongoing process improvements, specialty pharmacies can prioritize initiatives aimed at enhancing quality and safety outcomes, improving patient satisfaction, and maintaining a competitive advantage while ensuring cost-effectiveness.
