Abstract

This project involved the creation of a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) staff education project for nurse preceptors to utilize in nursing orientation. The project was to increase the nurse preceptors’ knowledge, awareness, and competencies of the hospital’s fall prevention plan. The gap in nursing practice issue was an increase in fall occurrences throughout the hospital. The hospital’s key performance indicators for fall events demonstrated a significant increase in fall rates. The practice-focused question for this project addressed whether a staff education project on fall prevention provided to nurse preceptors would result in a decrease in the number of the patient fall occurrences in the hospital? The purpose of the doctoral project was to address the identified gap in practice issue of increased fall occurrences. Ten nurse preceptors were invited to participate in the project. A pretest, posttest, and intervention were distributed to the nurse preceptors by the unit directors. Two of the invited 10 nurse preceptors responded, or 20% (N = 2). Although only two nurse preceptors responded, the completed project demonstrated a modest increase in knowledge. The benefits for the hospital, nurse preceptors, and nursing staff may lead to positive social change by improving learning outcomes and job satisfaction among nurses. These potential outcomes are in alignment with the mission and goals of Walden University’s College of Nursing for nurses to be champions of change through personal growth, professional development, and life-long learning.
