Abstract

This article explored the relationships among three interrelated components: marital distress, emotional loneliness and children psychological adjustment. We delineated major emotional consequences of chronically distressed marriages that deprive partners of intimacy, security and support. They include disengagement and emotional loneliness; the impact of marital conflict and distress on children’s adjustment and their feelings of alienation, with attention given to school achievement and academic performance, and suggest preventive and intervention modalities found effective for these problems.
