Abstract

This staff education project addressed the gap in standardized knowledge and implementation of evidence-based sleep hygiene interventions among nursing staff on an inpatient behavioral health unit. Sleep disturbances affect 80%–90% of psychiatric patients and directly impact treatment outcomes and recovery. I developed the practice-focused question to consider whether an evidence-based sleep hygiene education program would enhance the awareness, knowledge, and practices of the nursing staff regarding sleep hygiene interventions. A thorough literature review of 23 high-quality sources formed the background for the development of a structured educational intervention that encompassed assessment methodologies, nonpharmacological interventions, environmental interventions, and patient education interventions. Outcomes were measured using pre- and postintervention measurements, competency assessment, and satisfaction surveys. The mean knowledge scores improved by 25.2 percentage points, from 62.4% (SD = 8.3) to 87.6% (SD = 6.1; t = 12.45, p < .001). The scores on the self-reported competency evaluation increased by 45%, from 3.1 out of 5.0 (SD = 0.8) to 4.5 out of 5.0 (SD = 0.4; t = 10.87, p < .001). The level of confidence improved by 54% (t = 9.34, p = .001), from 2.8 out of 5.0 (SD = 0.9) to 4.3 out of 5.0 (SD = 0.5). The project has implications for positive social change, including better patient outcomes, decreased medication dependence, and improved staff competence as well as the project site serving as an example of behavioral health environments that seek to adopt evidence-based sleep promotion interventions.
